Hi I'm Emily!
PNW & Travel wedding and family photographer, mom to three beautiful kiddos, and lover of great food! Here you’ll find wedding recaps, advice for a successful session, a little bit of fashion, and the occasional yummy food recipe. Feel free to dig in and get lost in the pretty pictures.

Grand Central Station is one of those places that instantly elevates a session without you having to do much at all. The architecture, the movement, the warm tones, it has this built-in sophistication that is so beautiful every time, especially with engagement shoots.
When M + R chose Grand Central for their engagement session, it made perfect sense. They wanted something timeless, something that felt true to the city, and something that didn’t require an entire day of hopping around locations. Grand Central is one of those rare places that gives you variety without needing to go far.
After shooting here, I’ve learned that every gallery looks different because the energy of each couple brings the space to life in its own way. Because it’s such a big city, it might seem overwhelming to navigate, but I’m going to walk you through everything you need to know so you feel prepared and confident as you plan your New York City engagement photos!

Grand Central is a favorite for couples who want photos that feel:
It’s also perfect for couples who don’t want to run around the city to get variety. The station itself gives you:

My approach here blends gentle prompting with the natural energy of the space. Nothing overly posed, just relaxed direction, connection, and letting the environment add depth to your shoot! You don’t need to worry about what to do (that’s what I’m there for!)
With M + R, we used the main concourse for wide shots, then moved to quieter corners to create a slower, more intimate feel. It makes it so nice when you can have one location with different looks!
The station never fully empties out, but choosing the right time changes the feel of your photos entirely. Here’s what each timeframe realistically gives you:
Morning sessions offer the most breathing room. The crowds are lighter, the pace is slower, and you’ll have more flexibility with angles. If you want a more polished, minimal look, this is the best option.
Midday has more foot traffic, which actually works well for soft motion blur or creating that true “New York in motion” feel. With the right direction, it looks intentional and adds life to the frames without becoming chaotic.
Even though you’re indoors, the tones shift as the day moves. Golden hour feels softer and warmer, and it’s perfect if you want to step outside afterward for a second location.
The interior lighting takes over at night, giving your gallery a clean, moody, and slightly more dramatic feel. It’s great for couples who want a date-night vibe without leaving the building.

Grand Central looks best with outfits that have structure, texture, or movement! Think clean lines, neutrals, and outfits that complement the tones inside the station.
M + R wore neutral tones with classic silhouettes, which paired perfectly with the warm marble and gold lighting. You want outfits that stand out without competing with the environment!

If you want more outfit inspiration, these guides are great starting points:
There are a few iconic areas photographers love, and for good reason, but the key is knowing how to shoot them uniquely so that you don’t feel like your photos are the same as everyone else’s!
This is the heart of it all. Tall ceilings, symmetry, soft lighting, and the iconic clock. It’s the perfect place for wide, editorial frames or incorporating subtle motion blur from people walking through.
These are incredible for quieter moments. A stationary pose on the stairs with the station behind you creates a super classic NYC look.
These are perfect for editorial posing, like walking shots, leaning moments, and close-ups with depth.
These corners tend to be less crowded, and the lighting is clean and flattering.
If the weather cooperates, the outside of Grand Central, especially with the Chrysler Building nearby, gives you a completely different look without traveling far.

The short answer is maybe! Grand Central allows personal photography without a permit as long as you:
If you want to be 100% safe, I would check the official policy. For anything commercial, you must get permission. Engagement sessions usually fall under “personal” as long as the setup is simple! You will want to check with your photographer (or they should already know if they are familiar!)
If you want a second look, you’re in the perfect part of Manhattan. Here are popular add-ons within 10–15 minutes:
These go really well together if you want both indoor and outdoor photos.

1–1.5 hours is perfect. There’s plenty to work with inside without rushing.
Yes, but plan it strategically! Bathrooms are crowded, so a nearby hotel lobby or cafe is easier. Or just choosing outfits in layers so you can take layers off!
Weekdays > weekends! If weekends are your only option, early mornings are essential.
Grand Central is the best rain backup because you’re indoors and still getting beautiful photos.

If you’re dreaming up your own New York City engagement photos, whether at Grand Central Station or anywhere else in Manhattan, I’d love to help you build a session that fits your style and gives you photos you genuinely love.
