Hi I'm Emily!
PNW & Travel wedding and family photographer, mom to three beautiful kiddos, and lover of great food! Here you’ll find wedding recaps, advice for a successful session, a little bit of fashion, and the occasional yummy food recipe. Feel free to dig in and get lost in the pretty pictures.
If you’ve been around here for a while, you know I care about making your engagement shoot feel like more than a box to check. It should be personal and intentional, and honestly, these sessions end up being some of my favorite memories with couples. There’s something about that slower pace and the realness of it all!
This topic is so close to my heart that I was recently featured in Washington Wedding Day, sharing my go‑to tips for creating photos that feel true to you. And while the article was a great highlight, I wanted to dive even deeper here, because I know planning your session can feel overwhelming when you don’t know where to start.
To bring these ideas to life, I couldn’t think of a better example than J + N’s engagement shoot at Mt. Rainier. They chose an old fire lookout tucked into the woods, which gave us quiet trails, a sweeping view of the mountain, and a space where they could just be themselves. Their gallery is a perfect example of what happens when you plan with intention.
“Are you the modern city‑chic bride? Earthy and adventurous? Maybe romantic like a rom‑com. Wherever you fall, your engagement photos should showcase your personality, and location can set the tone.”
Your location does more than provide a pretty background; it helps tell your story. When couples ask me where they should shoot, a good question to start with is: Where do you feel most like yourselves?
J + N knew they wanted something outdoors and adventurous. A fire lookout near Mt. Rainier gave them a space that felt familiar and meaningful. It wasn’t about posing with the mountain behind them; it was about walking the trail, soaking in the view, and enjoying time together in a place they love.
For you, that might mean wandering Pike Place Market with coffee in hand, exploring the beach at Golden Gardens, or cozying up in your favorite neighborhood café.
If you’re exploring trail-based locations, the Washington Trails Association is a great resource for finding accessible, scenic spots.
“This is the most crucial part of getting amazing photos! Best light happens around sunrise and sunset. The light is even and flattering during this time of day, whereas midday can be harsh in the summer, and in winter, you can expect clouds and rain.”
Golden hour, those first or last hours of daylight, is my favorite time to shoot. The light is soft, warm, and forgiving. For J + N, we planned their session for late evening, which gave us those glowing highlights through the trees and a cozy, natural feel at the lookout.
If you’re planning a summer session, avoid midday; it’s often too harsh. And in the PNW winter, you don’t have to worry about clouds as they actually create beautiful, even lighting!
“Let’s be honest, as awesome as the Pacific Northwest is, the weather can be unpredictable, wet, foggy, and grey. The time of year will make a difference in how your photos look. If your wedding is happening in the fall and you want the same feel and color palettes for your engagement session, then shoot in October. If you want to run carefree in a pretty dress around the city, then the summer months are the best bet. The mountains are a stunning backdrop: In November, you have snow; whereas in July, it’s all about the wildflowers.”
Seasons bring their own color palettes, moods, and textures to your session. J + N planned for a summer/early autumn engagement session. Not only was it the best time because they could have the sunshine, but it still tied in with their wedding palette, creating a cohesive look between their engagement and wedding photos.
We got to explore the cliffs with the stunning Mt. Rainier in the background, and go into the woods for some moody photos, and it was the perfect shoot to match their wedding!
Whether you’re chasing blooming cherry blossoms in spring, the golden glow of summer, or that dreamy snowy forest in winter, the season you choose sets the tone for your gallery.
“Think about what you like to do together. Where do you like to spend time together? Where did you meet? What is the wedding vibe? These elements set the groundwork for telling your story in an artistic and authentic way.”
An engagement shoot shouldn’t feel like you’re checking off a to‑do list. It should feel like spending time together in a way that makes sense for you. For J + N, that meant a session full of hiking, exploring, and laughing together at the top of a mountain. No props or elaborate setups, it’s just genuine moments in a place they love.
Ask yourself: What would we do on our perfect day off? That answer is often the key to creating photos that feel natural and connected.
“What you wear can and will elevate your shoot and can complement the wedding aesthetic. Some couples choose to incorporate their wedding colors into their outfits. If in doubt on what to wear, aim for neutral, earthy tones.”
Your outfits don’t need to be complicated, but they should feel intentional. This is your excuse to pull out that outfit you’ve been saving for something special and put it to good use!
J + N wore soft, earthy layers: One of her looks was more casual with jeans and a simple white tank top with sneakers, her other outfit was a cream dress with a cardigan. He wore jeans and a simple flannel for one outfit, and for his second outfit, black jeans with a green long-sleeve shirt. Their look blended beautifully with the forest, letting their connection stand out instead of competing with bold colors or patterns.
If you’re stuck, I help my couples with wardrobe planning all the time; it’s one of the easiest ways to elevate your photos!
You can also peek at The Knot’s style guide or explore Pinterest outfit boards for inspiration, just don’t let it overwhelm you. The goal is to feel like the best version of you in front of the camera.
“If you don’t do your makeup and hair that often, having a professional is great. In photographs, more is sometimes good, as subtle doesn’t show up as it does in person. This is a great time to try out looks or makeup artists you may want for the big day.”
Even if you don’t wear much makeup daily, a little extra for your engagement shoot can make a huge difference. Cameras soften natural makeup, so what feels bold in the mirror usually reads soft and polished in photos.
J + N went for a natural, glowy look with just enough definition to pop in the soft evening light. And honestly? It was perfect.
This is also a great excuse to test out a hair or makeup artist you’re considering for your wedding day.
Looking through J + N’s gallery, you can see how all these choices came together. They picked a location that reflected them, planned around the best light, chose a season and outfits that made sense, and gave themselves space to just enjoy the experience.
Your engagement shoot should be more than pretty pictures. It’s a chance to slow down in the middle of wedding planning, celebrate where you are right now, and create photos that feel timeless.
When you think about location, timing, season, wardrobe, and what makes your relationship unique, you end up with images that you’ll love forever, not just ones that look nice on Instagram. If you want to read the full article, you can check it out here.
