Planning a wedding in the PNW? Oh my gosh, you’re in for something so pretty. With its dreamy forests, coastal cliffs, mountain views, and cozy city vibes, planning a Pacific Northwest wedding means you’ve got options—so many good ones. But with all that beauty (and, let’s be real, some unpredictable weather), it helps to have a solid wedding planning checklist made just for this region.
Congrats, you’re engaged!! Take a breath, pour some champagne (or grab a coffee), and celebrate this new chapter. Before diving into details, sit down together and talk big picture: budget, vibe, season, and your dream location. If you’re thinking of eloping or getting married outdoors, make sure to check out the local county office for info!
I photographed N & S’s wedding at Gold Mountain Golf Club, and their day is exactly why I love being a PNW wedding photographer. They had a rustic forest ceremony tucked under towering trees, a reception with views of the rolling greens, and a glowy, golden hour that peeked through the summer haze. It was romantic, full of heart, and yes—even with some smoky skies—it was perfect. So, let’s break down your very own Pacific Northwest wedding planning checklist, from engagement to the “just married” moments.
Getting Started: You’re Engaged!
Before you dive into planning, sit down together and talk about your big vision. Do you see yourself exchanging vows in a misty forest, barefoot on the beach, or with the Seattle skyline behind you? The PNW has it all, but knowing what speaks to you will help narrow things down fast and shape the perfect wedding planning checklist for your day.

Pacific Northwest Wedding Specific Tips: Plan with the Region in Mind
Planning a Pacific Northwest wedding means embracing what makes this place so unique. A few region-specific tips:
- Weather: Expect the unexpected. Even in summer, rain can sneak in (hello, June-uary). Have a solid Plan B for outdoor events.
- Light: Overcast skies are actually perfect for photography. That soft light? So flattering. I used natural light for most of N & S’s day, but had my flash ready for indoor moments and ceremony lighting.
- Landscape Vibes: Want those misty forest shots? Plan a fall or early spring wedding. Dreaming of warm light and a mountain backdrop? August is usually your best bet.
- Venue Ideas: In Washington, check out Gold Mountain Golf Club, TreeHouse Point, Lake Crescent Lodge, or Cape Disappointment. In Oregon, consider Hoyt Arboretum, The Evergreen, Black Butte Ranch, Griffon House, Wind Mountain, and Silvan Ridge Winery. Just to name a few!

N & S’s day is a great example of planning with intention. Their ceremony under the trees had a cozy, romantic vibe. Their reception view was forest-meets-fairy tale. The groom’s party portraits were shaded and calm despite the summer sun, and their couple portraits during golden hour? Oh my gosh, I still think about that dreamy haze from the sunset.
